Prefers forest streams, large rivers and ponds in wooded areas, also mangroves but never open country; also found along rivers in the Sundra region and near the coast on Sulawesi. 16 cms. Range: Oriental region; sedentary; locally fairly common resident on Sumatra and most nearby islands, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java and Lombok, rare on Bali.

Found along mangrove fringes, in open woodlands and along forest edges, and in scattered trees in fields near villages; usually in coastal lowlands but also hills inland. 22 cms. Range: Australasia, southern population migrates north; common southern winter visitor in Papua and Wallacea; common further north and west, including Java; uncommon in Kalimantan

Common Indonesian swallow, found in all types of open country habitat, from coast to inland, to lower montane elevation; often, but not exclusively near water. 14 cms. Range: Oriental region and Australasia; sedentary; widespread and common resident throughout Indonesia.

Found in open country, often seen in rural areas; associated with wet areas like river banks and flooded paddy fields, but does not eat fish. 25 cms. Range: Indonesian endemic; fairly common resident of Java and Bali only.

Found in open country, especially near the coast and on off-shore islands. 13 cms. Range: Southeast Asia; a locally common resident throughout the Sundra subregion and parts of Nusa Tenggars.

NOTE:  feeds on the wing; perches at nest deep in limestone caves; navigates in total darkness by audible translational rattle; builds nest which is unique translucent cup, collected and traded commercially by locals for consumption.

Found in a variety of climate zones and wetland habitats; prefers coastal estuaries, mangroves, freshwater marshes and paddy fields; often seen near the coast but also far inland. 60 cms. Range: Africa, Eurasia and Australia; resident in Sumatra, Java, Bali and Sulawesi and locally fairly common non-breeding visitor on all major islands.

Most numerous and widespread shorebird in Indonesia; found on tidal mudflats and on freshwater marshes far inland. 20 cms. Breeds in northern Eurasia, migrates south, reaching Australia; common passage migrant and winter visitor throughout Indonesia.

Open country species, locally numerous after forest clearances; seen in fields and grasslands, often near swampy areas; occurs from coast, inland to montane elevations. 11 cms. Range: Africa and Eurasia into northern Australia: In Indonesia a widespread and common resident on Sumatra, Java, Bali and parts of Wallacea and Papua.

Open country species which has benefitted from widespread forest clearances; found in cultivated areas and savanna grasslands with scattered trees; lowlands and often into montane elevations. Range: Middle east Asia through the Oriental Region and east to New Guinea: locally common resident in Java, Bali and parts of Wallacea and Papua.
