21-25 cm. Found on tidal mudflats, estuaries, shores and reefs of islands; coastal swamps, commercial salt fields. Breeds from Finland to ne Siberia: migrates to Africa, India, se Asia, Borneo, PNG, Aust. and NZ. Regular visitor to coastal Aust.; fairly common from n. WA to Hunter R. (NSW).
