26-29 cm. Found never far from water in grassed woodlands; foothills, watercourses, river flats, grassy plains; environs of homesteads. Range: e. Q, in suitable habitat, except settled parts of coastal and higher-rainfall areas, far sw and n C. York Pen. Locally common in n.; generally uncommon and much reduced by settlement, competition from stock; predation by cats, foxes, pot-hunting. Sedentary, part-nomadic.

Also known as Mountain Honeyeater. 20-22 cm. Found in highland rainforest; watercourse vegetation, wetter eucalypt woodlands; in winter, paperbarks, eucalypt woodlands. Range: ne Q: from near Cooktown (Mt Amos), s. on highlands to Paluma Ra., near Townsville. Common, sedentary, winter movement to coastal.

Also known as Yellow-eyed Cuckoo-shrike. 24-26 cm. Found in rainforest, vine scrubs and margins; eucalypt forest/woodlands; clearings in secondary growth; paperbarks; timber on watercourses; native figs; other trees with fruits; plantations, gardens. Range: coastal e. Aust.: breeds s. to Nambucca Heads-Port Macquarie (NSW); casual Hunter Valley. Summer breeding migrant in se Q.-ne. NSW; nomadic in response to ripening of rainforest fruit. Uncommon Q; rare NSW.

11-12.5 cm. Found in rainforest, vine scrub, creekside vegetation, eucalypt woodland, lantana. Range: from C. York (Q), s. to Archer R. on w. coast; s. to Ingham on e. coast. Locally common.

Also known as Glossy or Shining Starling and Whirlwindbird. Found in rainforest, coastal woodlands, scrubs, mangroves, gardens. 21-24 cm Range: from Cape York (Q) s. to c. Mackay; inland to Big Tableland near Cooktown-Atherton Tableland. migratory; arrives from PNG mostly Aug.-Sept. to breed.; departs Feb.-April. Common in lowlands, less common in highlands. Nests in colonies, has three broods, the first two broods helping with raising the young in further broods.

Found mostly in lowland rainforests, beach and vine scrubs. 40-50 cm. Range: n. Aust. and islands; from nw Kimberley (WA), to e. Arnham Land and Groote Island (NT); in Q, from MitchellR., w. Cape York Pen. and islands in Torres Strait, s. on e coast to near Byfield. Common; sedentary.

Also known as Silvery Owl. 38-38 cm. Found install tropical mountain forests; adjacent tall eucalyptforests. Range: rainforests and margins, adjacent tall eucalypt forests of Great Dividing Range., from Cooktown to c. Paluma, near Townsville, and Hinchenbrook I. (ne Q). Sedentary.

50-60 cm. Found in the margins of rainforests, tracks, clearings, eucalypt woodlands, scrubs, watercourse vegetation, swamp, dune woodland, mangroves, suburban parks with trees; campgrounds. Range: ne Q., and islands: large, pale race rogersi: C. York, s on Gyulf coast to Staten R., s. on e. coast to c. Cooktown; smaller darker rainforest dwelling race baileyi: s to c. Mt Spec NP, near Townsville. Common in n., scare, mostly coastal s. of Cooktown. Sedentary.

Also known as Nutmeg, Torresian Imperial or Torres Strait Pigeon. Found in rainforests; adjacent eucalypt woodland; coastal scrubs; creeks, rivers, mangroves; vegetated cays and islands. 38-44 cm. Range: coastal n. Aust., and many islands, incl. Gt Barrier Reef, from Kimberley (WA) to near Broad Sound (Q). Kimberley population resident, non-migratory. population from Top End (NT) to e. Q. migratory arriving from Indonesia-PNG arriving in Aug, departing Feb-April.
