Also known as Black-rumped Flameback. Found in forests, coconut plantations, and trees in open country. 26-29 cm. Fairly common breeding resident; the northern race in dry northern lowlands; the southern red-backed race is widespread throughout lowlands.

Found in open flat ground near water. 32-35 cm. Common breeding resident throughout Sri Lanka but rare in the hills.
