Sometimes referred to as the African Honeyguide. Named because of its habit of leading people to bee colonies. Range sub-Saharan Africa, in southern Africa to the south and the eastern half. Habitats that have trees, especially dry open woodland. 18-20 cm.

14-16 cm. Range across ne half of Southern Africa. Common in woodlands and savanna where there is ample grass cover.

Also known as Fiscal Shrike, Jackie Hangman, and Butcher Bird, was previously grouped with Northern Fiscal and known as Common Fiscal. Range through most of Sub-Saharan Africa, common across southern Africa except ne 21-23cm. Found in open habitat, gardens, hunting along roadsides, has habit of hanging prey in acacia bushes, hence name 'Hangman'.

22 cm. Range down eastern half of Southern Africa. Found in dry savannah, resident on cliffs and boulder strewn hillsides and ravines, forages on the ground.

Range along east coast of Southern Africa, and pockets in the north of Southern Africa. Found in thickets, forests and dense woodlands. 17 cm.

Range across ne of Southern Africa. Found in subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical most lowland forest, moist savanna, and subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, common in gardens. 11 cm.

Was formerly called Yellow-spotted Nicator, but now that name only applies to Western Nicator. Range in ne of Southern Africa. Found in subtropical or tropical dry forests, and subtropical or tropical moist scrubland.

Also known simply as Black Tit. Range in semi-circular arc from Angola to Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Found mainly in tropical and sub-tropical savanna woodlands, prefers woodlands dominated by broad-leafed trees. 16 cm.

Wattled Starling, in non-breeding plummage.

Range is across eastern and southern Africa, but beginning to extend into West Africa, and has also occurred in Arabia, Madagascar and the Seychelles. Found in grassland, open woodland and cultivation. 21 cm.


WOOLY-NECKED STORK

Also known as Bishop Stork, White-necked Stork, Episcopos or Mannickjore. 85 cm tall. Widespread  tropical species which breeds in Asia, from India to Indonesia, and also in Africa. Found in wetlands, along rivers and streams, mangroves, coastal mud flats and reefs, attends fires.

Range is most of savanna of eastern Africa south of Sahara. Found in broadleaf woodlands.

Currently classified as Black-winged Stilt, Himantopus himantopus,  but argument that it is a separate species. Range all over South Africa. Found in estuaries, marshes, saltpans, man-made impoundments, such as sewerage works.


CROWNED LAPWING

Also known as Crowned Plover. Range from Red Sea coast of Somalia to southern and southwestern Africa. Found in short, dry grassland which may be overgrazed, avoids mountains.




SENEGAL LAPWING

Also known as Lesser Black-winged Lapwing. 22-26 cm, wingspan 72 cm. Range ne of Southern Africa. Found in dry, open areas of savanna, favours burnt areas.
