Found in primary forest, secondary growth and nearby cultivation; occurs mainly in lowlands, but also lower montane elevations. 16 cms. Oriental region: locally fairly common resident in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java and Bali.

Found in closed rainforest. 23 cm. Sandra subregion; fairly common resident on Sumatra, Java and Bali; uncommon in Kalimantan.

Found in brackish lagoons and along sheltered coastal estuaries; sometimes seen over open sea and far inland along rivers and reservoirs. Eats only fish. 55 cms. Ranges worldwide: partly migratory; widespread but scare throughout Indonesia; mainly a non-breeding visitor but also a resident on many islands in the east.

Note: identified in the scope, photographed at a great distance in a storm.

Update: The Australian sub-species has now been given full species status.

Indonesia is an important wintering ground for this species. Found in mangroves of eastern Sumatra, sometimes in flocks of 10,000; frequents ponds just behind the tidal area and mudflats along sheltered beaches. 28 cm. Breeds in temperate Eurasia; winters south reaching Indonesia; common winter visitor and locally abundant in the Sundra subregion and on Sulawesi ad Flores; less common further east.

Most numerous of the small sandpipers in Indonesia; strictly coastal during migration, when found on mudflats near mangroves and sandblast at the mouth of estuaries. 15 cms. Breeds in northeastern Siberia;migrates south reaching New Zealand;widespread, common passage migrant and winter visitor throughout Indonesia.

Found in open coastal woodlands and monsoon forest;also seen in nearby cultivated areas and on the edge of villages. 23 cms. Indonesian endemic: generally scare resident on Java and Bali; vagrant on Lombok.

Avoids wet rainforests, preferring open monsoon forest, with scrub and long grass between trees, often just behind the coast. 29 cms. Range: Oriental region: In Indonesia occurs only on Java and Bali, where it is locally a fairly common resident.

Mainly open country; benefitted from forest clearings, quickly invading new grassland areas, marshes and cultivation. 42 cms. Distribution: Oriental region; widespread and common resident in the Sundra and Wallacea subregions.

Found along forest edges, in drought deciduous woodlands and savanna; often observed near the coast, as well as inland to 2,000 m. Males 70 cm; females 40 cm. Indonesian endemic: widespread and fairly common resident throughout Java, Bali. Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Alor, Sumba and some smaller adjacent islands.

Found on tidal mudflats, around prawn ponds and sometimes on freshwater wetlands. 23 cm. Distribution: breeds in central and northern Asia; migrates south reaching Australia; locally common passage migrant and winter visitor in Sumatra and Kalimantan; less numerous in the east.

In Kalimantan restricted to coastal mangroves; rest of Indonesia open woodlands and along forest edges inland. 13 cm. Distribution: Eurasia and the Orient region: widespread and common resident on Sumatra, Java and Bali; locally common in south Kalimantan and parts of Nusa Tenggara.
