Prefers forest streams, large rivers and ponds in wooded areas, also mangroves but never open country; also found along rivers in the Sundra region and near the coast on Sulawesi. 16 cms. Range: Oriental region; sedentary; locally fairly common resident on Sumatra and most nearby islands, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java and Lombok, rare on Bali.
