This species breeds in upland to montane oak (Quercus) and other broadleaved forests and similar wooded areas in temperate to tropical southern Asia, from Pakistan, Central India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia and southern China.

Also known as Black-shouldered Kite, once considered as part of one species with Australian Black-shouldered Kite and the White-tailed Kite of North and South America. Ranges open land and semi-desert in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia, and established in Spain and Portugal, expanding in southern Europe.

Found in primary and secondary forest, mangroves, forest edge, scrub, old plantations, parkland and even urban greenspaces. 13 cm. breeds across C Siberia and the Russian Far East, south to NE China, Korea and Japan; winters across S India to Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay Peninsula, Greater Sundas and Philippines; non-migratory populations occur inIndian sub-contijnet, mainland Southeast Asia and Borneo.

Endemic to Cambodia, likely confined to a single dense shrub habitat in the floodplain of the Mekong river. It was first discovered and recorded by scientists in 2009 in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, during avian influenza checks. In 2013, it was determined to be a unique species and formally described. It is a very small bird, about 10 cm long, with an orange-red tuft on its head.
