Very rare native. Found on the margins of freshwater wetlands or tidal lagoons. Vagrant until it started breeding on Whangaanui River in 1990s. Breeds October to March.

Rae Australian vagrant. Found in the margins of freshwater lakes and swamps, and damp pastures. Occasionally irruptions into New Zealand. A pair bred at Wainono Lagoon, South Canterbury in 2014/15.

Breeds subantarctic and Antartica, including several colonies in the Ross Sea sector. Migrates to Northern Hemisphere but occasionally seen in New Zealand waters mainly November to December and May to March. Breeding is December to April.

Maori name: Takahikare-moana. Breeds temperate and subtropical Atlantic and around Australia and New Zealand; main New Zealand colonies in Hauraki Gulf, Bay of Plenty, Motunau Island, around Stewart and Auckland Islands and Chathams. Disperse widely after breeding and rarely seen in New Zealand coastal waters. Breeding October to March.

Breeds in western Indian Ocean, southern Australia, Lord Howe Island, northern New Zealand, and in Cook Strait. Main New Zealand colonies at Hen and Chickens, Mercury Group, and Trio and Titi Islands. Ranges through coastal waters of North Island occasionally south to Foveaux Strait in the west and Banks Peninsula to the Chathams in the east. Migrates to North Pacific. Breeding November to May.
