Common migrant to coastal mudflats, freshwater marshes and wet grassland. 28 cm. Distribution: breeds across Eurasia, including much of Europe, Central Asia, Tibetan Plateau, NE China and E Russia; winters in Africa, Middle East, Indian sub-continent, Southeast Asia and Australia.

Note: Four subspecies: craggi, eurhina, terrignotae, ussuriensis which can only be distinguished from each other confidently when inbreeding plumage.
