Most numerous of the small sandpipers in Indonesia; strictly coastal during migration, when found on mudflats near mangroves and sandblast at the mouth of estuaries. 15 cms. Breeds in northeastern Siberia;migrates south reaching New Zealand;widespread, common passage migrant and winter visitor throughout Indonesia.

13-16 cm. Ranges over most of Australia except driest central WA, s. of NT and n. of SA. It breeds in the Arctic, Siberia and n. Alaska. Found on tidal mudflats, salt marshes, beaches, wetlands and sewerage ponds.
