Usually found in large expanses of overgrown freshwater swamplands, often near the coast; sometimes seen in tidal mangroves and less often in short paddy fields; prefers tall, dense marsh and riverside vegetation, where it stalks aquatic invertebrates and tiny fish. 38 cm. Oriental region east in Australasia; partly migratory; resident on Sumatra; locally common winter visitor and possibly resident throughout much of Indonesia.
