Common resident of primary and secondary rainforests, forest edge, scrub and old plantations. 34 cm (+ 30 cm tail). Distribution: much of Indian sub-continent, S China, mainland Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay Peninsula and Greater Sundas.

Breeds in Arctic tundra across NE Russia and Alaska; winters in East Africa, Indian sub-continent and access S China and Southeast Asia, east to SW Pacific.

Uncommon winter visitor and passage migrant, occurring on coastal mudflats, sandy beaches, canals, and open muddy ground adjacent to ponds. 17 cm. Distribution: breeds across much of Eurasia, from North Africa and Europe to Indian sub-continent, east Asia, Philippines and New Guinea; northern populations migrate to winter on coasts of Africa, Middle East, Indian sub-continent and much of East and Southeast Asia to N Australia.
