Found in primary and secondary forest, mangroves, forest edge, scrub, old plantations, parkland and even urban greenspaces. 13 cm. breeds across C Siberia and the Russian Far East, south to NE China, Korea and Japan; winters across S India to Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay Peninsula, Greater Sundas and Philippines; non-migratory populations occur inIndian sub-contijnet, mainland Southeast Asia and Borneo.

Found in mangroves, parkland, urban areas and especially coastal scrub; forages on roadside trees. 17 cm. Distribution: Thai-Maly Peninsula, Greater Sundas, Philippines.

Occurs along mangrove creeks, ponds and reservoirs with forest fringes and suitably large water bodies in secondary scrub and old plantations. 37 cm. Distribution: Indian sub-continent, mainland Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay Peninsula, Greater Sundas east to Philippines and Sulawesi.

Found in primary and secondary forest, scrub and old plantations. 25 cm. Distribution: S China, Himalayan foothills to E India, mainland Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay Peninsula and Greater Sundas. 

Note: Unusual symbiotic relationship with tree ants; builds its nest in ants' nest while feeding on ants of other nests.
