Found mainly on the coast and large tanks, also along rivers. 66-71 cm. Rather uncommon breeding resident in lowlands and up to lower hills, more common in dry lowlands, regular visitor to higher hills.

Races in Sri Lanka and South West India sometimes treated as separate species, Square-tailed Bulbul. Found chiefly on forest edges and trees. 25 cm. Fairly common breeding resident in wet lowlands, locally present up to high hills and local and rare in dry lowlands.

Found near shady streams and ponds in forests. 13 cm. fairly uncommon breeding resident locally from lowlands unto lower areas of mid hills.
