Found on tanks, lakes and marshes. 25-29 cm. Resident Africa, Madagascar, W Palearctic, C Asia, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, China, Taiwan, N. S Korea, Japan, Java, Bali, Philippines, Wallacea, New Guinea, Soloman Islands, and uncommon to common resident throughout SE Asia.

Mainly freshwater bird found in extensive swamps and adjacent, flooded paddy fields; sometimes around mangroves and tidal estuaries. 90 cm. Range: Africa and Eurasia: generally uncommon but locally numerous resident throughout the Greater Sundras and east into parts of Wallacea.

Found in open forest and woodland, open areas and cultivation, urban areas, mangroves, up to 1,525 m. Resident Sandra's, Philippines; uncommon to common resident S Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Indochina, S Tenasserim.
