Vagrant to Christmas Island, Ashmore Reef and NW Australia. Common in wide variety of habitats, open country, coastal areas, ponds, plantations, gardens, but particularly mangroves.


NOTE: Taxonomy complex. About 50 ssp traditionally recognised from India to Micronesia; however Australian Collared Kingfisher was given species status and called Torresian Kingfisher; and SE Asian Collared Kingfisher was also given full species status.

Found in mangroves, beach scrubs and plantations. 25 cm. Recorded from S and Southeast Asia through New Guinea and Australia. Resident populations in Malaysia are augmented by seasonal migrants.

Common resident of coastal mangroves, secondary scrub, old plantations, parkland and urban areas. 24 cm. Widespread across much of coastal Middle East, Indian sub-continent, Southeast Asia and Australia.

Mainly associated with tidal habitats, from mangroves and mudflats to sandy beaches and coral reefs; also found around fishing villages and in many areas move inland. 24 cm. Range: Oriental region and Australasia: common resident throughout Indonesia, present on virtually all islands.

Also known as Mangrove Kingfisher. 24-29 cm. In Australia found in mangroves, tidal creeks, nearby beaches, mudflats, jetties, poles, street trees, gardens. Range: coastal n. Aust. from ne. NSW (lower Clarence R.) to Shark Bay (WA). Common, s. birds are migratory. Also found in Polynesia to Red Sea.
