Common resident and migrant, occurring in mangroves, secondary forest and scrub, marshes, ponds with vegetated fringes, wet grasslands and parklands. 33 cm. Distribution: widespread across much of Indian sub-continent, Southeast Asia and E China, north to Ryukyus, and east to Sulawesi and Lesser Sundas.

Found in freshwater wetlands and coastal mangroves; has adapted to living in drainage canals and flooded fields near villages and gardens. 33 cm. Range: Oriental region, mostly sedentary. Common throughout Sunda and parts of Wallace.
