Found in middle and lower storeys in lower montane and upper montane forest, at 800-2,000 m, including forest edges, old landslides and overgrown cultivation. 15 cm. Ranges through hill forests in Indochina and discontinuously to mountains of Peninsula Malaysia.

Confined to lower montane forest, usually from c. 850 m upwards into upper montane forest as high as 2,070 m. 19 cm. Resident from the W Himalayas to S China and Southeast Asia as far as Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
