A very rare endemic which which was thought to be extinct when last four known birds were taken in 1898, however a small population were rediscovered in 1948 and conservation efforts have seen the population grow. Natural range is tussock land and beech forest in mountains west of Lake Te Anau; however also introduced to rank grasslands on a number of islands. 63 cm.

A rare endemic found in forests on predator-free islands, especially Little Barrier, Tiritiri Mating and Kapiti Islands, and Maungatautari and Zealandia.

Locally abundant endemic found across most of New Zealand, exceptnvery north of North Island and central east of South Island. 20 cm. Found in native and exotic forest, scrub, farm shelter belts, parks and gardens.

Also known as kakariki. Locally common endemic found mainly in centre of North Islands but pockets elsewhere. Male   28 cm; female 25 cm. Rare in native forest on mainland but common in forest on Stewart Island.

Known as Pied Cormorant in Australia; a common native throughout New Zealand. 56 cm. Found in lakes, farm ponds, rivers and streams, also estuaries, harbours and sheltered coastal waters.

Known as kereru or kukupa, a common endemic across all New Zealand. 51 cm. Found in native forest, especially in lowland areas, scrub, forest patches among farmland, ruralnand city gardens and parks.

An Australian introduction which is well establish and locally common in the top half of North Island. 18 cm. Found in scrub edges in rough farmland.

Also known in Australia as Indian Myna. In New Zealand a locally abundant Asian introduction, covering most of the North Island. 24 cm. Found in parks, gardens, orchards, farmland and sometimes on forest margins.
