GREAT KNOT

Also known as Slender-billed Knot or Striped-crowned Knot. 26-28 cm. Found in tidal mudflats, sandy ocean and bay shores; estuaries; shallow saline and freshwater wetlands. Breeds in ne. Siberia, migrates to India, s and se Asia, Indonesia, PNG and NZ. Sept-March to coastal Aust. and Tas., inland in nw Q., nw Vic. Common in Top End(NT) to coastal nw. WA, where may gather in flocks of 20 000. Some will over-winter in northern Aust.

11-13 cm. Found in mangroves, monsoon forests, vine scrubs, blossomingeucalypt woodlands; paperbarks, watercourse-vegetation, parks, garden. Range: coastal tropical nw. and n. Aust. and islands; from Broome (WA) to c. Melville, e. C. York Pen. (Q); inland to c. Katherine Gorge (NT).

Also known as Blackhearts.  15-16.5 cm. Found in grassy woodlands near water; coastal plains with pandanus. Range: coastal n. Aust., from Broome (WA), through Kimberley, Top End (NT), s. to c. Elliott; e. into nw. Q, to c. Burketown-Leichhardt R., s. to Mt. Isa region.

19-21 cm. Found in low, dense mangroves; rainforest fringing coastal streams, springs. Range is discontinuous distribution in suitable mangrove habitat around coastal n. Aust., from n. of Carnarvon (WA) to Edward R., w. C. York Pen. (Q).

Also known as Black-tailed Whistler. 15-17 cm. Found in mangroves, coastal rainforests or monsoon forest; riverside thickets, eucalyptus woodlands, coastal scrubs/heath. Range: coastal n. Aust., many coastal islands; from Carnarvon mangroves (WA) to near Mackay (Q).

Found on rainforest margins; open forests, woodlands, taller inland/coastal scrubs; beaches, tidal areas; in arid regions, ranges, gorges, timber on larger watercourses; also farms, settlements. Range: from c. Raymond Terrace (e. NSW), throughout n. and inland Aust. (except far sw Q. and driest deserts); s. through s. NT to Mann, Musgrave and Everard Rs.-Eringa (nw. SA); in WA, s. coastally to c. Geraldton, s. to c. Corrigin-Norseman.

Male 24-26 cm; female 18-19 cm. Found in pastures, cereal crops; in inland, open grassy country, saltbush etc. Range: mainland Australia, mainly s. of Tropic and inland Gt Divide: reaches coasts in ce. Q, w. Vic, SA, most of WA s. of Broome. Highly nomadic.

Also known as the Little Restless Flycatcher. Found in tropical woodland and riverine habitats of northern woodland habitat of n. Australia and s. New Guinea: found from Kimberley Region of WA, across Top End of NT, to Gulf Country and sw Q.; Saibai Island in Torres Strait. Was regarded as a subspecies of Restless Flycatcher.

34-38 cm. Found in drier woodlands, shrubs/thickets; near water, outer urban areas, parks, gardens. Range from c. Broome (WA) through Kimberley, Top End (NT) s. to about Elliott; Gulf Coast s. to Nicholson, O'Shannassy, upper Flinders Rs; occasional s. to Mt Isa (Q); C. York Pen., coastal to near Mackay.





AUSTRALIAN PRANTINCOLE

22-24 cm, wingspan 50-60 cm. Found in the vicinity of water on inland plains to coastal floodplains; stony ground with sparse low shrubs; bare margins of swamps; stock-tanks, stock routes, airfields. Range: n. and inland e. Aust, from c. Eighty Mile Beach (WA) to Rockhampton (Q), s. to coastal SA;casual in inland WA and Nullarbor Plain. Breeds mostly s. of Tropic, migrates n. in autumn-winter to n. Aust. ; Torres Strait, PNG, Indonesia, Borneo.
