Frequents open country, especially large grassy lowlands and flooded fields; often follows cattle around, catching insects, frogs and insects that the animals stir up as they graze. Range: worldwide warm climates, nomadic: Sumatra, Java, Bali and Sulawesi, generally common and locally abundant throughout Sundra and Wallacea.

An adaptable species which has invaded disturbed habitats, from its original haunts on forest edges and coastal woodlands; now a garden bird found in every West Indonesian village, from lowland up to 1,500 m. 20 cm. Range: South-east Asia: common resident in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java and Bali, also on Lombok and South Sulawesi.

Breeds Pakistan, India, parts of SE Asia, China, Japan and Philippines: migrates to spend Nov.-Feb. or later, from coastal nw. WA to Top End (NT) and Gulf country of nw Q. Within Australia nomadic depending on rainfall, huge companies (tens of thousands) suddenly appearing over plains, then moving on.

WA, NT and nw Q in wet season; singles or small parties casual to c., e. and se Aust. in summer; vagrant to Tas.
