EASTERN OSPREY

Also known as Fish Hawk. 50-65 cm, span to 1.7 m, female larger. Range all around coast of mainland except from Adelaide to NSW border. Found on coast, estuaries, bays and inlets, does venture inland.

NOTE: There were four recognised sub-species of Osprey around the world. This Australian sub-species, cristatus, has now been classified as its own species, Eastern Osprey (2016)

Also known as Red-backed Kite. 43-51 cm, span 1.2 m, female larger. Found around the coast from Carnarvon (WA) across the top and down to Newcastle (NSW). Found beaches, estuaries, tidal sand flats, mangroves, rivers and towns.

12-15 cm. Range range along e. coast from Cape York to NSW border, also across the top end of NT. Found in vine scrubs, rain forests, watercourses, eucalyptus woodlands, paperbarks.

17-19 cm. Range coastal n. and e. Australia from Broome, with break in the Gulf and then down to Frazer Island. Found in dense mangroves, pockets of rain forests, paperbark and eucalyptus woodlands.

Range limited to Mistake Mountains s. of Gatton (Q) to Nightcap Range, Mullumbimby (NSW), isolated population at Mount Tamborine. Found in dense sub-tropical rainforests and scrubs. male 90 cm including tail, female 76 cm.

Also known as Little, papuan or White-breasted cuckoo-shrike. 26-28 cm. Range across the Kimberley, right across the top of Australia, including Cape York and down as far asVictoria and into SA, inland to half the state in Queensland and NSW and across most of Victoria. Found in forest/woodland, red river gums, grassland, mangroves, gardens.

BASSIAN THRUSH

Also known as Ground Thrush, Mountain Thrush, Scaly Thrush or White's Thrush. Range from just above Brisbane on the coast, around until se tip of SA, all of Tasmania, pocket around Adelaide, pocket on coast near Atherton Tablelands. Found in rain forests, forests, woodlands, coastal scrubs, and pine plantations. 26-29 cm, very difficult to tell from Russet-tailed Thrush, some even suggesting same bird.

Also known as Grape-eater and Grey Peter. 18-22 cm.  Ranges across the mainland except on the east coast, Cape York, Kimberley and Arnhem Land. Found on coastal dune scrub, inland mulga, mallee and gardens. One of the first birds calling in the morning, about 30 minutes before dawn.
