Very rare native. Found almost worldwide in open country; vagrant to New Zealand until they bred successfully near Kaitaia since 2007.

NOTE: horrible photographs but recognisable and a family group of three were seen and heard very clearly.

Two distinct populations in Australia: one on flood plains of large rivers from Cape York to Manning River (NSW); the other on grasslands on Barkley Tablelands and Channel Country (WA)

Note: This owl was first discovered in 2003 and was formally described in 2013.
