Mainly freshwater bird found in extensive swamps and adjacent, flooded paddy fields; sometimes around mangroves and tidal estuaries. 90 cm. Range: Africa and Eurasia: generally uncommon but locally numerous resident throughout the Greater Sundras and east into parts of Wallacea.

Found in trees, bushes and emergent vegetation fringing wetlands. Widespread throughout Europe, Africa, Asia to Indonesia; vagrant to Australia.

78-86 cm, 550-1200 g. Range eastern half of South Africa. Found in wetlands, particularly amongst sedges and reeds, rarely feeds in open.
