Found on tanks, lakes and marshes. 25-29 cm. Resident Africa, Madagascar, W Palearctic, C Asia, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, China, Taiwan, N. S Korea, Japan, Java, Bali, Philippines, Wallacea, New Guinea, Soloman Islands, and uncommon to common resident throughout SE Asia.
