The nanday parakeet, also known as the black-hooded parakeet or nanday conure, is a medium-small, mostly green, Neotropical parrot native to continental South America.  The species is native to South America from southeast Bolivia to southwest Brazil, central Paraguay, and northern Argentina, from the region known as the Pantanal. Caged birds have been released in some areas, and the birds have established self-sustaining populations in Tenerife, Los Angeles, California, San Antonio, Texas, and several areas of Florida (including Pasco, Sarasota, Pinellas, Manatee, Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties) in the United States.

The bird feeds on seeds, fruit, palm nuts, berries, flowers, and buds. Feral birds also come to bird feeders. Wild birds primarily use scrub forest and forest clearings around settlements.

In winter found in riverine forests near settlements, sometimes in large flocks; moves deeper into broadleaf forests and in smaller flocks in breeding season. 38 cm. Resident, frequent in Chitwen, uncommon elsewhere.

Also known as Ring-necked Parakeet. 42 cm. Often associated with habitation and cultivation; also open woodland and secondary growth. Abundant and widespread resident in lowlands; only occasionally seen higher up except in Pokhara and Kathmandu.

Although from Asia and Africa this parakeet was a popular pet and escapees have established themselves in many countries where their populations have reached considerable numbers. An introduced species in Singapore where it is on the increase. There are four recognised subspecies.

Extremely endangered, one of Australia's rarest birds, in 2013/14 breeding season only 44 birds known to be alive in the wild, extensive breeding program at Healesville zoo has been reintroducing birds into the wild. Forages on salt marshes, beaches, dunes. Previously known as Orange-breasted Parrot as 'belly' was considered too inelegant; also known as yellow-bellied Parrot, Orange-bellied Grass-parakeet, and Trumped-up Corella.
