Also known as Streaked Fantail Warbler. Widespread throughout southern Europe, Africa, and southern Asia down to northern Australia. Many found in grassland, often near water. As many as 18 subspecies: 3 of these in Australia: leanyeri (northern Australia), normani (northwest Queensland) and laveryi (northeast Australia).

In SA (Eyre Pen.) heath country, swampy localities. Range: broken distribution in sw WA and Eyre Pen. (SA).

Found in most environments with tree or shrub cover, feeds in canopy of trees and shrubs, hover gleans from outer foliage. Common but regarded as Near Threatened because its whole population is on one island.

Race: personata, also known as Black-throated warbler. Found on the edges of lowland rainforest, vine forest, leafy trees on watercourses; eucalypt woodlands; scrubland; mangroves. Range: n and e Q and islands. Race: personata: Cape York Pen., s. to Atherton Tableland-Innesfail on e coast and Staten R on w coast. Race: flavida; coastal s. from c. Innesfail to Fraser Is., Tin Can Bay, Kin Kin, and Widgee in se Q. Fairly common,Sedentary. The distinctive races do overlap and interbreed.

Nest, the bottom has caught on a branch as it swayed in the wind.

Habitat reeds, cumbungi, pencil rush, over water; river red gum regrowth; weeping willows, bamboos, crops near irrigation channels, public gardens. Widespread e. and coastal WA, mostly south of Tropic; uncommon in Tasmania.
