RED-BROWED TREECREEPER

13.5-16 cm. Habitat: limbs, loose bark of trunks, upper branches in tall eucalyptus forests, mainly in hilly and mountainous country and where these emerge into deep rain forested gullies, to sea-level. Range: se. Aust., from se. Q Tewantin s. through forested highlands and coastal NSW, e. and n. of Melbourne, w. to Wombat State Forest, but not Otways.

The largest and darkest of the Treecreepers. 17-20 cm. Found in open eucalypt forest, grassy woodlands and open scrub in hilly, breakaway country and lowlands; in nw Aust., large timber, red river gums on watercourses, dead trees. Range: from Carnarvon (WA), through Hamersley and Kimberley regions into NT, s. to Banka Banka-Alexandria; in nw. Q., e. to lower Leichhardt R.-Cloncurry. Isolated small, pale race wellsi in Pilbara region of WA.

Also known as 'woodpecker'. Endemic to s. WA/SA: n. to Shark Bay, inland to Laverton-Vokes Hill, e. to Eyre Pen. (SA) except for unsuitable habitat on Nullarbor. Found in jarrah-karri forests in humid sw WA; timber on watercourses; golf courses, parks; wandoo and salmon-gum woodland associations. 15-17.5 cm.

14-15 cm. Found in semi-arid, arid inland scrub, stands of belar in mallee, mulga, native pine, black box and saltbush. Range southern inland mainland from upper Gascoyne River (WA) to Cobar/Bourke (NSW).

Also known as Little Treecreeper or Woodpecker. 16-17.5 cm. Range down eastern mainland Australia from Mackay to SA border, and around Adelaide. Found in rainforests, wetter eucalypt forests, woodlands, coastal teeters, ravine forests, mallee and brigalow.

Also known as Woodpecker. Found in drier forests/woodlands/scrubs, and margins of denser wooded areas. Range through eastern states of mainland but not Cape York and overlap into SA.
