The red-bellied woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker of the family Picidae. It breeds mainly in the eastern United States, ranging as far south as Florida and as far north as Canada. These birds mainly search out arthropods on tree trunks. They may also catch insects in flight.[citation needed] They are omnivores, eating insects, fruits, nuts and seeds. Their breeding habitat is usually deciduous forests. They nest in the decayed cavities of dead trees, old stumps, or in live trees that have softer wood such as elms, maples, or willows; both sexes assist in digging nesting cavities. Areas around nest sites are marked with drilling holes to warn others away.

The laced woodpecker (Picus vittatus) is a species of bird in the family Picidae. It is found throughout Southeast Asia in the countries of Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical mangrove forest, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.

Found in broadleaved evergreen and deciduous forests, secondary growth, coastal scrub, mangroves, gardens, plantations, bamboo up to 1,525 m (lowlands only Peninsula Malaysia, Singapore). 27-33 cm. Common resident in S Peninsula Malaysia.

Also known as Black-rumped Flameback. Found in forests, coconut plantations, and trees in open country. 26-29 cm. Fairly common breeding resident; the northern race in dry northern lowlands; the southern red-backed race is widespread throughout lowlands.
