The puff-throated babbler or spotted babbler (Pellorneum ruficeps) is a species of passerine bird found in Asia. They are found in scrub and moist forest mainly in hilly regions. They forage in small groups on the forest floor, turning around leaf litter to find their prey and usually staying low in the undergrowth where they can be hard to spot.

Found in broad-leafed evergreen forest, secondary growth, bamboo, sometimes mixed deciduous forest; up to c. 1,500 m. Common resident throughout most of SE Asia.

Keeps in flocks, mainly on ground; found in forests, wooded areas and trees in villages and town gardens, but avoids forests in wet zones and adjoining hills. 23 cm. Common breeding resident from lowlands up to mid hills; uncommon and local higher up.

Range mainland Australia, mostly west of Divide and north of Divide in Vic., not in driest part of s. NT and n. SA.

Q. n. to Windorah, e. to Mitchell-Dirranbandi; w. NSW, e. to Ligthning Ridge-Nyngan-Condobolin-Moulamein; far nw Vic., e. to Swan Hill; e. to sa, s. to c. Swan Reach; w. to Quorn-w. of Flinders Ras-Maree-e. of L. Eyre to Innamincka. 21-23 cm.
