Found on forested banks of rivers and streams, lakes and paddy fields adjoining wooded areas. 38 cm. Uncommon breeding resident from lowlands up to lower hills.

Found over shaded pools, slow-moving rivers and streams in well-wooded country. 35 cm. Locally fairly common and quiet well spread resident, particularly in south.

Occurs along mangrove creeks, ponds and reservoirs with forest fringes and suitably large water bodies in secondary scrub and old plantations. 37 cm. Distribution: Indian sub-continent, mainland Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay Peninsula, Greater Sundas east to Philippines and Sulawesi.
