Indonesia is an important wintering ground for this species. Found in mangroves of eastern Sumatra, sometimes in flocks of 10,000; frequents ponds just behind the tidal area and mudflats along sheltered beaches. 28 cm. Breeds in temperate Eurasia; winters south reaching Indonesia; common winter visitor and locally abundant in the Sundra subregion and on Sulawesi ad Flores; less common further east.
