BROWN THORNBILL

Both pale and dark variants. 10 cm. Range down e. coast and highlands from Prosepine (Q) to Adelaide (SA) and on Tasmania. Found in under storey in rain forests, eucalyptus, woodlands, scrub, ware course, bracken, dune-vegetation, mangroves, parks and gardens.

48-53 cm, span c. 90 cm.  Range from the Kimberley to coastal se. and around to Adelaide, also in sw WA and Tasmania. Originally came to NT from Indonesia in 1940s. Found in stock paddocks, pastures, croplands, wetlands, tips and drain ways.

INTERMEDIATE EGRET

Also known as Plumed Egret. 56-70 cm. Range across northern third of mainland and e. half of mainland and in Tasmania. Found in freshwater wetlands, pastures and crop land, idal mudflats and floodplains.

Note: two different subspecies. If split bird from Cocos Island is nominate species. Bird from Australia will become Plumed Egret.   NOTE: now split by IOC 23 September 2023. Bird below is now a separate species.

Range from Kimberley across the top of Australia and down e. coast to tip of SA, ranges inland to cover most of Q, NSW and Vic., small pocket around Adelaide. Found in rain forests, eucalyptus forests and woodlands, timber on watercourses, mallee and gardens. 26-28 cm

13-16 cm. Ranges over most of Australia except driest central WA, s. of NT and n. of SA. It breeds in the Arctic, Siberia and n. Alaska. Found on tidal mudflats, salt marshes, beaches, wetlands and sewerage ponds.

24-32 cm. Often heard in rainforests, making the noise of a cat or a baby crying. ranges down the e. coast and Great Divide from s. of Gladstone, Queensland to s. of Narooma, NSW. Found in mountain and lowland rain forests, densely forested gullies, paperbark and other watercourses.

Also known as Port Lincoln Parrot, Port Lincoln Ringneck or Twenty-Eight Parrot. 34-37 cm. Found in forests, woodlands, red-river gums, mallee, mulga, farmland and gardens. Range southern half of WA, central and south NT, and western two-thirds of SA.

20-23 cm. Found in eucalyptus woodlands, drier forests on foothills, plains, roadside timbers, timbered watercourses, and bush dams. Ranges along coast to a distance inland from above Brisbane to near Adelaide.

38-46 cm, female larger. Found on tidal mudflats, estuaries, shallow river margins, and flooded pastures. Range on mainland Australia except in driest e. of WA, ranges around coast of Tasmania. The god wit breeds in ne. Siberia and nw. Alaska and migrates to Indonesia and Australia, will sometimes winter here.
