FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATER

NEW ZEALAND.                130

Breeds in western Indian Ocean, southern Australia, Lord Howe Island, northern New Zealand, and in Cook Strait. Main New Zealand colonies at Hen and Chickens, Mercury Group, and Trio and Titi Islands. Ranges through coastal waters of North Island occasionally south to Foveaux Strait in the west and Banks Peninsula to the Chathams in the east. Migrates to North Pacific. Breeding November to May.

Breeds on on Poor Knights Islands. Ranges widely around New Zealand coast and migrates to northern and eastern Pacific. Breeding from November to May.

Breeds only in Seaward Kaikoura Range. In NZ waters mainly off the east coast South Island and in Cook Strait but migrates to Australian waters in winter. Breeding October to April.

Mostly over offshore waters and continental shelf slope, occasionally inshore waters. May show some interest in fishing vessels; occasionally observed from land. Often joins other species of shearwaters, noddies, terns feeding.Regular non-breeding migrant to tropical Aust. waters from breeding islands off Japan and Korean Peninsula. Generally uncommon.

Population of near 5 million mostly in the Atlantic Ocean with regular occurrence into w Indian Ocean near SA. Vagrant to Australian waters with about 6 sightings before an influx in 2011. Most records over off-shore waters or at the shelf.

Also known as Brown Petrel, Pedlunker, and Grey Shearwater. Occurs in open seas of Southern Hemisphere, mainly between 49 degrees South and 32 degrees South. Numbers are decreasing and believed to be only 400,000 left. Breed in burrows in the ground, laying only one egg.

Also known as Grey-backed Shearwater or New Zealand Shearwater. Migrates across north and south Pacific Ocean outside breeding season. Mainly feeds on squid, fish and crustaceans; sometimes follows ships as part of mixed species feeding flock. Breeding season starts in October and lasts nearly 6 months.

Also known as Lord Howe Island Muttonbird. 40-46 cm, span c. 1.3 m. Breeds on Lord Howe Island and in s. WA in in Recherche Arch. and islands w. to C. Hamelin. Common Nov.-April from c. Bunbury (WA) to coastal SA; autumn-spring migrant on w. coast n. to c. Carnarvon (WA); in e. Aust. common n. NSW to se. Q in summer; in Q, offshore autumn-spring passage migrant. Rare Vic., Bass Strait and Tas. pacific birds migrate to n. and ne. Pacific, WA birds probably to n. Indian Ocean. Also breeds NZ and S. Atlantic.
