Found in drier eucalypt forests, especially 'Manna' (white) Gum. 9-10 cm. Now confined to coastal se Tas; South Bruny Island north to Maria Island, adjacent Hobart environs, especially Tinderbox Pen., s of Kingston. Rare, local. Sedentary, young dispersive. Endangered.

11-12 cm. Found in drier eucalypt woodlands, scrublands; tall mulga and other acacias; gums on watercourses. Range: found coastal n. and inland Aust., except Top End (NT); s. on e. coast to c. Rockhampton (Q); s. inland to Mitchell (Q); nw. NSW s., and e, to Brewarrina-Hilelston-Broken Hill; n. to Flinders Ras., -Gawler Ras, Gt Victoria Desert; in WA, to w. coast from Gascotne R., n. to Kimberley region.

Also known as Pickwick, Wittachew and Chip-chip. 9.5-11.5 cms. Over most of Australia except area  towards east of Western Australia and around junction of borders of NT/SA/Queensland.

Six subspecies in Australia:
substiatus:                   Most of mainland, WA except n; SA, s NT; se Q; w NSW;w Vic.
melanocephalus:         e Q.except north.
uropygialis:                 northern Australia
ornatus:                       eastern NSW and e Vic.
striatus:                       Tasmania
melvillensis:               Tiwi Island
