In Australia known as Masked Lapwing. An abundant native across most of New Zealand. 38 cm. Colonised NZ from Australia in the 1930s and after a slow start spread after 1960 across most of country.

Found on the margins of lakes and large rivers, marshes, agriculture, wasteland: up to 1,525 m. 31.5-35 cm. Uncommon to common resident throughout SE Asia.

Found in open flat ground near water. 32-35 cm. Common breeding resident throughout Sri Lanka but rare in the hills.

Found on sandbanks and shingle banks of rivers. 29-32 cm. Locally fairly common resident in lowlands, frequently in mid-hills.

Also known as Crowned Plover. Range from Red Sea coast of Somalia to southern and southwestern Africa. Found in short, dry grassland which may be overgrazed, avoids mountains.

Also known as Lesser Black-winged Lapwing. 22-26 cm, wingspan 72 cm. Range ne of Southern Africa. Found in dry, open areas of savanna, favours burnt areas.

35 cm. In Hindi known as tittibha. While it ranges from Iraq, sw Iran, eastward across South Asia, India, Kashmir and Nepal, these are made up of several sub-species. In Nepal it is the sub-species atronuchalis. Found in wetland habitats.

Also known as Masked or Spurwinged plover. It is 35-38 cms. Noisy and aggressive towards intruders when nesting. Found on swamp margins, airfields, open areas and paddocks. Ranges over all Australia except bottom south-west quarter of mainland.
