Recently split, was considered a subspecies of Rufous Fieldwren. Endemic to sw Australia. Inhabits low shrubland, particularly saltbush and bluebush communities. Forages for insects and seeds, hopping along ground through undergrowth; will hop to top of bushes to investigate disturbance.

13 cm. Range from sw. Q-far w. NSW-far nw. Vic w. through SA to s. WA, n to NW Cape and Gt sandy Desert, except sw corner. Found in inland/saltmarsh vegetation, saltbush, bluebush, spinifex, holy-poly, low shrubs in depressions in spinifex in gibber plains.

Also known as Cocktail, Fieldwork, Reedlark and Sandplain-wren. 12.5-14 cm. Range along coastal se Australia from nw of Sydney to Lake Alexandria in SA; also across Tasmania. Found in low shrubs, tussocks, swamp-fringes, salt marshes; alpine, coastal heaths; dune vegetation.
