Also known by Maori name Karearea. Uncommon endemic. Found in forests and bush patches, open tussock land of South Island. Juveniles wander to cities, orchards, and offshore islands.

NOTE: Very distant photographs of the falcon resting on the next hill spur. Will replace with better shots when able to.

Breeds in open rugged hills and mountains, also lakes and large rivers in winter. 38-51 cm. Locally frequent, generally uncommon resident, winter visitor and passage migrant.

Found in lightly treed inland plains; gibber deserts, sand ridges, pastoral lands, timbered watercourses; seldom in driest deserts. 30-44 cm, span to 90cm. Female larger. Range: resident or nomadic visitor to inland parts of all mainland States, especially in Simpson desert-Strezlecki Track region of NT, SA, w Q and far nw NSW; nw coast of WA from Shark Bay to e Kimberley; ne coast near Townsville (Q) rare to very rare; sedentary, dispersive or part-migratory.

Endemic to Australia mainland, found in most areas except driest se WA, w SA and sw NT. Found on plains, grassland, foothills, timbered watercourses, wetland environments, crops, occasionally over towns and cities. 45-55 cm, wingspan to 1.2 m.
