Commonly called Striated Heron. Found stalking on the mud at the edge of rivers, mangroves or the sea, even along small forest streams. 45 cm. Throughout much of tropics and subtropics in South America, Africa and Australasia. and in Asia extending as far N as Japan and Ussuriland. Common throughout SE Asia as resident and migrant.

Also known as Little Heron. 45 cm. Adaptable and successful heron found in mangroves, coastal ponds, canals, rivers, reservoir fringes and even ponds in urban parkland. Distribution: widespread across much of the Americas, Eurasia, Africa and Australia.

Also known as Little Heron. 45 cm. Adaptable and successful heron usually found on tidal mudflats, in mangroves, on coral reefs and exposed beaches; can alsonbe found far inland around lakes and large rivers. Distribution: Tropics worldwide; partly migratory; widespread and common resident throughout Indonesia.

Also known as Mangrove Heron. 43-51 cm., wingspan c. 70 cm. Range around coast from Eden north across the top of Australia and down the west coast to Shark Bay. Also found in the Americas, Afro-Asia, PNG and Polynesia. Found in mangroves, tidal waterways, mudflats, jetties, wetlands, swamps, freshwater lakes.
