Also known as Sacred Kingfisher in Australia. An abundant native in New Zealand. 24 cm. Found in forests, river margins, farmland, lakes, estuaries and rocky coastlines; moves towards the coast in winter.

Found along mangrove fringes, in open woodlands and along forest edges, and in scattered trees in fields near villages; usually in coastal lowlands but also hills inland. 22 cms. Range: Australasia, southern population migrates north; common southern winter visitor in Papua and Wallacea; common further north and west, including Java; uncommon in Kalimantan
