Also known as Silver-backed Butcherbird, Derwent or Tasmanian Jackass. 24-30 cm. Range includes Tasmania, SA, Victoria, NSW, se half of Queensland, bottom half and top fifth of WA, areas to north and to south of NT. Found on margins of rain forests, vine-scrub, paperbarks, woodlands, coastal scrub, roadsides, parks.

Three subspecies in Australia:
torquatus:              over much of Australia, from southern half of WA to most of Q, NSW
leucopterus:          east coast of NSW, east and se of Victoria
cinereus:               eastern half of Tasmania.

Also known as Barking and Howling Jackass. 38-40 cms in size. Across the north of Australia and down as far as Brisbane. A large pocket in WA around Shark Bay/Pilbara. tropical and sub-tropical woodlands, paperbark swamps, watercourses, clearings.

Also known as Laughing Jackass. It is 17-19 cm. Found along the eastern part of the eastern states from Cape York across to Adelaide, the south-west of Western Australia and in Tasmania. Usually found in pairs, or a dominant pair with some 'helpers'.  Found in woodlands, forests and timbered areas. Was introduced to SW Western Australia in 1897.
