Uncommon native. Known by Maori name Moho pereru, and in Australia as Buff-banded Rail. Found in salt marshes, mangroves and less commonly in freshwater swamps; also on some off-shore islands.

Also known as Banded Landrail or Banded Rail. Ranges across mainland Australia except in central Australia. Found on fringes of rain forests, swamps, wet paddocks, scrubby woodlands, heathlands, crops and near tourist resorts. 28-33 cm.
