Found in dense forest. 23 cm. Rather common breeding resident from lowlands to higher hills; but local and rarer in dry lowlands and the high hills.

Also known as Plumed Frogmouth. Two separated races. Marmoratus: found in Monsoon forest, vine scrub, gallery forest on creeks, near eucalyptus, other woodlands; race plumiferus: pockets of closed subtropical rainforests up to c. 700 m. Range: marmoratus: Cape York (Q) s. on e. coast to McIlwaith Ra.; plumiferus: patchily from Many Peaks Ra.; s. of Gladstone (Q) to Lismore (NSW), inland to c. Kalpower (Q). Local, uncommon. Sedentary.

50-60 cm. Found in the margins of rainforests, tracks, clearings, eucalypt woodlands, scrubs, watercourse vegetation, swamp, dune woodland, mangroves, suburban parks with trees; campgrounds. Range: ne Q., and islands: large, pale race rogersi: C. York, s on Gyulf coast to Staten R., s. on e. coast to c. Cooktown; smaller darker rainforest dwelling race baileyi: s to c. Mt Spec NP, near Townsville. Common in n., scare, mostly coastal s. of Cooktown. Sedentary.

Also known as Frogmouth-owl or Morepork. 33-50 cm. The male is larger.  Widespread across all of Australia. Found in forests, margins of rain forests, tracks, clearings, golf courses, parks, woodlands.
