COMMON KINGFISHER

Also known as the Eurasian Kingfisher and River Kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.

Occurs in all kind of water bodies on migration, including open streams, canals, reservoir edges, ponds with reedy fringes and mangrove creeks, seldom in forest streams. 17 cm. Widespread across much of Eurasia with many races; occurs east to Soloman Islands; winter visitor to Indian sub-continent and Southeast Asia.

Found in wetlands in open country and forest. 16 cm. Rather uncommon breeding resident almost throughout Sri Lanka, but rare in higher hills.
