Found on tidal mudflats, occasionally on margins of freshwater lakes. 77 cm. Distribution along the coasts of both islands, main breeding colonies at Parengarenga Harbour, Kapiti Island, Okarito, Vernon Lagoons, and islands off Otago and Southland coasts.
